Dimensions summary
The software itself is free. You pay only for the AWS EC2 instance you run it on, billed hourly. The 17 options map to different EC2 instance types across the t2, t3, t3a, c7a, and c8a families. Sizes range from small through 2xlarge, so hourly cost scales with the compute and memory each instance provides. Larger sizes carry more resources and cost more per hour. Pick the instance type that matches your expected server load. All options run the same self-hosted server; they differ only in underlying hardware capacity.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each unit is one running AWS EC2 instance of the chosen type, billed per hour. The Bitwarden server software is free. Your hourly charge reflects the underlying compute and memory of that instance family and size, such as t3.medium or c7a.medium.
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance stops accruing hourly charges. Underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume may still apply while the instance is stopped, but the metered hours count only running time.
All 17 options run the same self-hosted server, so choice depends on server load, not features. Larger sizes add compute and memory for more concurrent users and directory sync. The c7a and c8a options are compute-focused; t2, t3, and t3a families offer burstable general-purpose sizing.

Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

Usage instructions
Before you begin with your Bitwarden VM, you will need to obtain:
- A hostname (domain or subdomain) where you can create a DNS record pointing to your VM's IP address
- A Bitwarden installation ID and key from https://bitwarden.com/host/ . Bitwarden requires at least 2GB of RAM, so make sure to choose a plan with enough memory during creation. After you create your Bitwarden VM, Bitwarden's dependencies and installation scripts will be preinstalled and ready for you to use. You will need to connect to the VM via SSH to complete the setup.

Once you connect, you'll be prompted to complete Bitwarden's installation. Provide the hostname that you will use (be sure you have setup the DNS record), your installation ID and key, and answer the questions about how you will configure SSL with your Bitwarden installation. Bitwarden requires a secure HTTPS connection to operate. The installer can generate a self-signed certificate for you if you do not have one.
After you have completed the installation, you can visit your Bitwarden domain in a web browser, register a Bitwarden user account, and log in.
Your Bitwarden VM has also been preconfigured with automatic updates so you won't need to worry about keeping the Bitwarden server application up to date. Update checks will occur weekly.
Finally, application settings (such as a SMTP mail server) can be configured in /home/bitwarden/bwdata/env/global.override.env. If you need to make changes to your server's installation settings, you can do so in /home/bitwarden/bitwarden/bwdata/config.yml.

What do you like best about the product?
I really like Bitwarden's UX because it solves almost everything on a single screen. I find the experience more direct, simple to understand, and efficient, without requiring the user to navigate through multiple screens to complete a task.
What do you dislike about the product?
One thing I don't like is that some information and settings are a bit hidden, requiring more navigation than I would like. Although I really like the idea of solving everything on a single screen, I think the hierarchy could make it clearer what the main action is and where to find certain settings.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In corporate use, Bitwarden primarily helps to centralize and securely share credentials among the team. It also facilitates access control, preventing passwords from being scattered or needing to be shared manually.

What do you like best about the product?
It’s a very fast and user-friendly solution in terms of its interface. The extension is very useful for always having an icon accessible in the browser, and the fact that I—as someone who works in the IT sector—can add SSH keys along with bank cards and other credentials is very convenient. Plus, being able to detach it and open it in a separate window is a real treat.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only downside is that sometimes the app feels a bit clunky, and when it comes to selecting multiple users for the same form, I prefer the way Zoho handles it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I don't have to come up with complicated passwords, I don't have to memorize them, and I know they're secure. Plus, I can generate them based on the parameters I choose. At work, I generate a lot of credentials and use existing ones. I don't have to go to the trouble of remembering them.

What do you like best about the product?
I really appreciate how easy Bitwarden is to use. I also like the ability to generate passphrases and autofill websites, which are really handy features for me.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't like that I have to lock the extension to get passwords that have been updated by a team or group. I wish it would auto update, but I understand for security purposes, that might not be possible. Also, the initial setup wasn't as easy as I'd like.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Bitwarden for secure password storage and generating passphrases. It simplifies my life by autofilling websites and is incredibly easy to use.

What do you like best about the product?
I really like the security that Bitwarden offers. The integration with website input boxes is one of the best things, as it eliminates the need to consult a password file, decrypt, copy, and paste, which is an unpleasant process. This feature is extremely useful and makes using Bitwarden very practical. Additionally, I found the initial setup very easy and intuitive.
What do you dislike about the product?
I have difficulty with Bitwarden's integration in desktop applications, both on Linux and Windows. This is a feature that currently does not exist and would need to be developed from scratch to be useful.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Bitwarden to avoid weak and old passwords and to have security without password files or notes. The integration with input boxes eliminates the need to copy and paste passwords, making everything easier.

The master password, strong and long, can be used as a phrase. Combined with 2-factor authentication.

The fact that it is open-source is good on one hand, but bad on the other, as it allows hackers access to the source code.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The fact that it allows using a phrase as a master key, along with encryption and 2-factor authentication, raises the security level and makes me feel more at ease.
