What is our primary use case?
Our main use case for bucket_av involves using the Scan on Access feature to scan files whenever they are accessed from our S3 buckets, specifically files that are provided by our customers.
bucket_av works for our team in a fully transparent manner, as we are using the Scan on Access functionality which allows us to use the S3 bucket as if it were a normal S3 bucket.
It fits very nicely into our workflow and required no changes in our application code.
What is most valuable?
The Scan on Access feature of bucket_av stands out especially for us because we did not have to make any changes to our application code, which was already using an S3 bucket.
That is the main feature we are using; we are not using any other features at the moment.
bucket_av has positively impacted our organization by giving us confidence that the files we are handling do not contain any malware or anything of that nature, so it definitely brings benefits to our security posture.
What needs improvement?
bucket_av has actually added the features that we wanted within a couple of days, showing they were very responsive and helpful.
My experience working with their team has been great, as the response times have always been very short and they have always taken any input seriously and acted on it.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using bucket_av for about two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
bucket_av is stable with zero downtime, but there was one incident when it did not seem to scan the files; however, restarting the nodes helped and that has happened only once in two years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
bucket_av's scalability is perfect, as the autoscaling group seems to work just fine and handle all the traffic we can throw at it.
How are customer service and support?
The customer support for bucket_av is perfect, as they usually answer within thirty minutes of an email and always provide very clear answers to the questions that we have.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
In a different project, we used a self-hosted ClamAV solution, which required continuous instances and maintenance, so I switched to bucket_av because it just works on spot instances for us.
How was the initial setup?
It was very straightforward to deploy bucket_av in my environment with Terraform, utilizing the Terraform CloudFormation they provided.
My experience with the configuration process was mostly easy, though the only issue was that they changed the subnet feature somewhat, which resulted in some update failures, but other than that, it was very straightforward.
What was our ROI?
I have seen a return on investment, as in a previous project where we managed our own antivirus solution, it was quite a bit more work and required effort almost monthly, if not weekly, so bucket_av is clearly saving us time and the pricing is perfect.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing for bucket_av was as expected with no surprises; it is a very cost-effective way to perform this task.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We discovered bucket_av and it was the most convenient option right away, so there was no need to look for anything else.
What other advice do I have?
My experience with the procurement process was easy.
It was really easy to buy bucket_av through the AWS Marketplace; I encountered no problems.
My thoughts about the metering and billing experience are positive, as bucket_av provides their own dashboard for the volumes and data usage, so it is fairly easy to see how much data is going through and the amount of money it costs.
My advice to others looking into using bucket_av is that if you want a bolt-on solution to scan S3s, I think it is a perfect solution if you do not want to modify your application code that is already using an S3 bucket.

What is our primary use case?
BucketAV grants us an additional security layer in case any of our userbase uploads malware.
How has it helped my organization?
BucketAV has provided an additional layer of protection for our S3-based document storage by automatically scanning uploaded files for malware before they are processed by downstream applications.
It has helped strengthen our security posture without requiring significant operational overhead. Deployment through CloudFormation was straightforward, and once configured, the service has been reliable.
I also appreciate that it integrates well with AWS services and follows an event-driven architecture.
What is most valuable?
Real-time scanning of newly uploaded S3 objects provides immediate protection against malicious files. It also requires low operational maintenance once deployed.
What needs improvement?
There is a need for better dashboards showing scan progress, throughput, and estimated completion time.
More detailed cost visibility is required to understand the impact of scheduled scans.
Native alerting integrations for Microsoft Teams and additional notification options would be beneficial.

What is our primary use case?
We use BucketAV for scanning S3 objects for potential malware and viruses.

BucketAV has helped our organization by assisting with privacy compliance when handling highly sensitive data.
What is most valuable?
The ease of set-up and configuration are valuable. The ability to scan S3 objects on upload and quarantine files if appropriate is very useful since it allows us to have a compliant architecture. In addition, the support from the BucketAV team has been quick and reliable. I trust that we can rely on this product for future maintenance.
What needs improvement?
The pricing is a little high. We still need to evaluate if pricing is acceptable once we start scanning more objects.

I have been using the solution for 3 weeks.

We have been using the product for more than a year for buckets scanning. It gives us great value, very easy to install, upgrade and operate. It also has a very good dashboard and quick and efficient support.

What do you like best about the product?
VirusScan for Amazon S3 is the best scanning application that can be used to submit files with code for scanning.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing much as it uses clamAv for scanning, but seems to do the job.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Super easy to setup and integrates well with other services. We use it with SQS to notify our application of a hit to keep everything up to date.

Scalable, flexible solution for running anti-virus scans at scale. We ran about 1M scans in the last few weeks, no issues.
Some highlights
- this truly is single-click-to-deploy. Whereas many marketplace solutions often require extensive outside configuration, this one is extremely easy to set up and doesn't hang or cause other issues
- great documentation
- flexibility to create whatever sort of queue-based, notification-based workflows you might want or need to support (ex. send to slack, send to webhook via SNS, etc)
- continues to be updated regularly

We have been using BucketAV for several months. While reviewing possible solutions for S3 AV scanners, a few key factors drew our attention to BucketAV:
- well documented installation instructructions
- choice of ClamAV or Sophos
- overall AWS overhead costs - based on usage
- integration within AWS, not a separate UI
Before I go into more detail, BucketAV has AAA support. We had questions ranging from multiple AWS accounts, on-demand and scheduled scanning, EC2 autoscaling and file upload queuing. The developers were always quick to respond and resolve my issues quickly, following up if they had not received a response.
We chose the ClamAV option as it suited our needs.
The installation instructions were very clear. The process of purchasing BucketAV from the AWS Marketplace to having a running default installation was minutes, not hours or days.
After installing BucketAV, modifying the parameters is done through an AWS CloudFront template. It is a very simple process to deploy change. The deployments are quick, so any changes can be tested and reverted within minutes or other tweaks added.
There are also add-ons available for scheduled scanning and reporting, also handled by CloudFront templates.
At the end of our installation and configuration our environments have:
- BucketAV scanning for all environments
- all environments are using spot instances
- on demand EC2s for all environments but production
- varying EC2 autoscaling based on the environment
- scanning one S3 bucket per environment
- immediate notification if a suspicious file is found
- on-demand full scan available
CloudWatch dashboard - this is part of the default BucketAV installation
Scheduled Scanning
- different schedules for different environments
Weekly/Monthly reports based on the Scheduled scanning
TL;DR: End user support 10/10, ease of installation, very customizable, easy to scale, low overhead cost, well integrated with AWS, ClamAV core.
