A lightweight EC2 Image Builder component that installs the Spillbox software for HPC clusters. The component tracks cluster compute usage and integrates with AWS Marketplace for pay-as-you-go billing.
Spillbox HPC Usage Metering Component is an EC2 Image Builder component designed for high-performance computing (HPC) environments deployed within a customers AWS account. It is intended for cloud-bursting and hybrid HPC architectures commonly used in semiconductor design, engineering simulation, and large-scale compute workloads. The component installs the Spillbox software during AMI build time and prepares the instance with the required services and dependencies for HPC environments. It is designed to be used as part of a customer-managed AMI build workflow and can be combined with a customers own base AMI and Spillbox software stack using EC2 Image Builder. Compute and worker nodes remain lightweight and optimized purely for workload execution.Spillbox environments are frequently deployed in hybrid cloud scenarios, where on-premises resources are extended into AWS through elastic cloud bursting. In these deployments, workloads may scale up rapidly, run for short durations, and scale back down when jobs complete. The controller-based architecture ensures consistent cluster coordination without requiring agents on dynamically created compute nodes, making it well suited for elastic and short-lived HPC workloads.Spillbox solutions also optimize data movement between on-premises and cloud environments by transferring only the data required for active jobs, leveraging high-performance networking and local storage to minimize latency and cost. While data may move dynamically across environments, the installed controller software focuses on cluster coordination and compute workload management within AWS.Pricing for this product is based on standard AMI hourly pricing configured in AWS Marketplace and is fully calculated and billed by AWS Marketplace. No custom usage metering, pricing logic, or billing calculations are implemented by this component. This design ensures a scalable, cost-efficient, and operationally simple solution for advanced hybrid cloud HPC architectures without impacting application workflows or performance.
Highlights
Spillbox has easy setup, enabling zero-click or single-command cloud bursting of any EDA application, requiring no workflow changes or application-specific setup.
Cloud cost reduction by 50%: Spillbox minimizes storage expenses to just 2.5% of compute costs, transferring only essential data while utilizing the cloud's local NVMe. No cost when not used.
Same performance in the cloud compared to on-premises. Automatically scales to massive workloads.
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time.

If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for this usage metering component, billed per EC2 instance type you run. Each dimension maps to a specific instance shape, and the hourly rate reflects that instance's size and family. Smaller sizes cost less per hour; larger sizes and bare-metal shapes cost more. Compute-optimized (c-series), memory-optimized (r- and x-series), general-purpose (m- and t-series), storage (i- and d-series), and accelerated (g-, p-, inf-series) families are all covered. Your total depends on which instances you use and how many hours they run. There is no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of a listed instance type actually meter?
Each dimension meters one running hour of that specific EC2 instance shape used by the metering component. You are charged for the hours the instance runs. The rate follows that instance's size and family, so a bare-metal shape costs more per hour than a small size.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or my workload is idle?
The software meters running hours only. Instances that are stopped or fully powered off do not accrue this hourly software charge. Because the product supports bursting workloads to the cloud during peak demand, you pay only while instances are active, not during idle periods.
If I run several instance types at once, how do the charges combine?
Each instance type bills independently at its own hourly rate. Your total adds up every dimension you run, multiplied by the hours each runs. Larger fleets and bigger shapes raise the bill. There is no single metric; cost tracks the mix of instances and their running time.
