This listing is designed primarily for use with AWS License Manager to perform license type conversions on running Ubuntu LTS instances. While launching an instance directly from this listing will deploy the latest Ubuntu Pro AMI, standard deployments should use our dedicated version-specific Marketplace listings.
Choosing the Right Ubuntu Pro Upgrade Path
Select the method that best matches your operational requirements:
- Deploying new instances: Launch a standard Ubuntu Pro AMI directly from the EC2 Console or AWS Marketplace.
- Upgrading existing instances and can stop/start them: Use AWS License Manager to convert running Ubuntu LTS instances to Ubuntu Pro on a pay-as-you-go basis without redeploying.
- Upgrading existing instances (zero downtime / no reboot): Contact Canonical to obtain annual subscription tokens for seamless, rebootless upgrades.
- Custom EC2 Image Builder AMI pipelines: Integrate the "Upgrade to Pro" component into your EC2 Image Builder pipelines.

Dimensions summary
You pay hourly to upgrade Ubuntu LTS to Ubuntu Pro on Arm-based (Graviton) EC2 instances. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, billed per running hour. Pricing scales with instance size, based on the number of vCPUs. Small instance types like t4g.nano carry the lowest per-hour rate, while larger types such as x8g.48xlarge or metal variants carry higher rates. You select the dimension matching your instance. This charge covers the Ubuntu Pro upgrade only and is separate from your underlying EC2 compute cost.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
The charge is based on the instance's vCPU count and metered by the second. Each dimension maps to a specific Graviton instance type, so larger types with more vCPUs carry higher per-hour rates. You pay only for the running time of the instance you select.
The upgrade is metered by the second on running instances only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue this software charge. You may still owe separate AWS fees, such as storage, but the Ubuntu Pro upgrade meters active runtime.
The charge covers the Ubuntu Pro upgrade: security patches for infrastructure and open source applications, FIPS and Common Criteria certified components, CIS and DISA STIG hardening options, and Kernel Livepatch. It does not include your underlying EC2 compute cost, which AWS bills separately.

The default username for SSH access is 'ubuntu' and the default port is 22. You can connect to the instance either by opening port 22 in your security group or by using EC2 Instance Connect.
